New Media

Posted on: May 17, 2010

New media is a term meant to encompass the emergence of digital, computerized, or networked information and communication technologies in the later part of the 20th century. Most technologies described as “new media” are digital, often having characteristics of being manipulated, networkable, dense, compressible, interactive and impartial. Some examples may be the Internet, websites, computer multimedia, computer games, CD-ROMS, and DVDs. New media is not television programs, feature films, magazines, books, or paper-based publications.

The project for the LAU social class was about interviewing different people with different ages to know more about their opinion about new media and how much time they spend using it. They were also asked about the social media they use and about its advantages and drawbacks.

To the first interviewee Dima Hamdan,21 years old,who is majoring in business, new media is an important mean of communication like msn, blogs, twitter…She mentions that it is essential for business men in their work and for students inorder to communicate with their friends abroad.

The second interviewee Tala Hamdan,13 years old,who is a 7th grader said that new media is important to keep us coected with our friends. Tala uses most facebook, msn, and skype..She uses the internet on daily basis and she doesn’t mind if she was banned from using the internet for one day because she got another stuff to do.Tala said that she uses the blackberry to add contacts and stay connected with them.

The third interviewee Ghida Shaaban,a 29 years old medical representative said that new media is a one second communication and that it is very much important on the professional level.Ghida doesn’t use new media regularly but she uses her professional email(hotmail) to accomplish her work or certain websites for the sake of researching.Ghida explained that she deactivated facebook because she wasn’t that active on it because she doesn’t find it interesting. She also continued that blackberry should be used by regional managers because they travel alot and not by students or normal people because they are always distracted to it.Ghida said that new media is benefitial on the professional level inorder to do researches and the communication by using it is affordable but it also has drawbacks because it is a waste of time and increases the gossip.

The similarities between these three videos is that new media is an important mean of communication and it is essential since it keeps us connected to the world and keep us updated and that all parties mention facebook, msn, and blackberry. However, there is only one difference between them is that Ghida is not into new media unlike the others although she considers it essential.

I used my blackberry inorder to record these videos and uploaded them by youtube. It was very hard for me to add the captions, subtitles, and annotations and I actually didn’t.

My favorite part was interviewing and shooting the interviewees  and the least favorite was adding the captions and subtitles. Also the process of uploading was somehow slow.

People should take into consideration that New Media is very essential in our modern lives because it keeps us connected to each other and keeps us updated. It also improves our work and helps us make the world as a small village(globalization).

During the process of shooting I stayed updated on twitter and mentioned every step I am doing. It made me somehow nervous because the interviewees couldn’t make it the previous two days which made me wait for the very last second.I hope this project will help me pass this course.

Chatroulette is a website that pairs random strangers from around the world together for webcam-based conversations. Visitors to the website randomly begin an online chat (video, audio and text) with another visitor. At any point, either user may leave the current chat by initiating another random connection.

The Chatroulette web site was created by Andrey Ternovskiy, a 17-year-old high school student in Moscow. Ternovskiy says the concept arose from video chats he used to have with friends on Skype, and that he wrote the first version of Chatroulette in “two days and two nights”. Ternovskiy chose the name “Chatroulette” after watching The Deer Hunter, a 1978 film set in the Vietnam War in which prisoners of war are forced to play Russian Roulette.

In early November 2009, shortly after the site launched, it had 500 visitors per day. One month later there were 50,000. The site has been featured in The New York Times, New York magazine, and on Good Morning America, Newsnight in the United Kingdom, Tosh.0, and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Chatroulette was even parodied in the South Park season 14 episode “You Have 0 Friends”.In February 2010, there were about 35,000 people on Chatroulette at any given time. Around the beginning of March, Ternovskiy estimated the site to have around 1.5 million users, approximately 33% of them from the United States and 5% from Germany.

To me Chatroulette is a good way of communication that allows you to see through camera people who are hard to reach. However, I am not a fan of it because I hate webcamed conversations especially with strangers taking into consideration that meeting strangers helps improve the social life but it is also dangerous because these people are still anonymous to us.

The two other similar services are Skype and MSN..and i prefer skype because I consider it more private..I don’t think such programs will pick up in Lebanon because people are busy with stuff away from technology and Lebanon is small which makes it easier for people to meet each other.

Foursquare is a  combination of locations based social media application where users can ‘check-in’ at venues and text what they are doing at that location. The 4square account is automatically connected to twitter and facebook. Installing the application was easy and practical but using it was somehow complicated. I want to become the mayor of Verdun, Kraytem, Skybar, White…Every time a user checks-in, they are directly advertising and influencing their followers/friends for that specific venue which is essential in Business.  I think it offers a unique blend of part friend-finder, part social/nightlife guide. It’s like Twitter but instead of tweeting what you are thinking or reading, it’s ‘where are you and what are you doing?’ Basically, it offers a great way to keep in touch with your friends but also get you out and explore your city. privacy is controlled in 4sqr, since you choose when to check in and publish where you are.

Interviewee 1:Ghida Shaaban, medical representative,29 years…since she is not into new media so I would like to know the reason

Interviewee 3:Tala Hamdan,Gr.7 student,13 years..since she is somehow into internet
